Arc de Triomphe

While there are triumphal arches all over the world, the most famous one is the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile in Paris.
Construction of the arch began in 1806 by order of Napoleon following his victory at the Battle of Austerlitz. However, it was not completed until 1836—thirty years later—meaning Napoleon had already passed away; it is a well-known fact that he never got to pass under the arch during his lifetime. The arch has also served as a symbolic backdrop for historic moments, such as when Hitler passed under it during the occupation of Paris in World War II.
Situated at the center of a traffic circle with twelve radiating avenues, the Arc de Triomphe is literally the heart of Paris. Due to the heavy traffic, visitors must use an underpass to reach the base of the monument. Emerging from the underpass brings you directly beneath the arch, allowing you to experience its massive scale up close.
The sculptures adorning the walls of the arch are another highlight; learning about the significance of these reliefs beforehand can greatly enhance your appreciation of them.
There is also an observation deck; visitors purchase tickets underground before ascending. From the top, you can see the roads radiating outward from the arch, the Champs-Élysées, the Eiffel Tower, and other famous landmarks, giving you a true sense of being at the center of Paris.
If you want to capture the perfect photo of the Arc de Triomphe, the best spot is from the crosswalk on the Champs-Élysées—specifically near the Franklin D. Roosevelt metro station. From this slightly more distant vantage point, the arch appears at its most beautiful, showcasing its majestic position atop the hill.
